How to Choose a Jump Ring
- Gauge is wire thickness. The higher the number, the thinner the wire: 26 gauge is thinner than 24 gauge, and 24 gauge is thinner than 22 gauge.
- OD is the outer diameter of the closed ring. The jump ring needs to pass through the end link of your chain and sit nicely without looking oversized.
- Match the jump ring to the chain. Dainty chains look best with a smaller, thinner ring. Bold chains need a sturdier ring that balances the look.
- Oval jump rings sit more naturally with elongated links like paperclip chains.
- Italian enamel satellites use 26 gauge, 2.3mm OD before cut or 24 gauge, 2.6mm OD once cut. These are not beginner-friendly chains.
- Match your metal. Use a gold filled jump ring on gold filled chain and a sterling silver jump ring on sterling silver chain.
